I do both - take reviews into consideration and buy random books. Strangely plenty, I rarely go wrong with with my random picks - I have extremely fine honed instincts for books :)
Some the all-time books I've bought accept been simply by looking at the cover and judging it from the encompass and just buying it. Granted there's that whole thought about non judging a volume by it's comprehend, but sometimes it actually works! However, I similar getting reviews from my friends but I NEVER E'er rd reviews on the dorsum of the book as those tend to give away the whole plot!
Sometimes I practice considering with each book existence more than than x dollars, it'southward non worth the risk. But when it comes to certain books like the Warriors series, I know that they'll be good. I tend to check but the stars first because I observe that spoilers are almost always in at least ane review that can ruin it for me.
Also, another fun thing I exercise is check out reviewers who liked the book I only read and, since we may have similar opinions about information technology, encounter what other books they might have liked in their other reviews (Amazon lets you exercise this past clicking on their "run into all my reviews"). That's how I find a lot of books I probably never knew existed before then.

I do the same :)
Mod just like every dominion has exception ;)
there are times when i buy books based on pure gut feeling either by looking at comprehend of the volume and/or reading random page from the book.
only unlike Daman who have extremely fine honed instincts for books, my instincts let me buy few books which made me cry over them but to complete them and become over with.

Like yous I've establish that a few books have been a mistake. Luckily those are usually library books that I can simply return, just one book in particular: Candy fabricated me think twice before every buying a volume without knowing anything about again!

Rarely :)) There is that book I choice up that brings me grief!! Simply since I, as a rule, seldom abandon a book in the middle - like you I stubbornly lie on my bed of nails :)))

That'southward the worse....when you accept a book that is painful to rd.
I don't read reviews before I purchase a volume. I go buy the information on the book. I do similar to check out the reviews after I read it to see what I think about a book compares to others.
Aye! considering I would love know what I'm reading about!!:D
Black Queen wrote: "Yes! considering I would dear know what I'm reading about!!:D" Exercise you lot read reviews online or the review on the back of the book? :)
Generally online
I do.I am easily swayed by fancy covers and so its really a must for me to read the reviews first before I buy anything.
I've been hoodwinked by tons of pretty covers but disappointing contents.
Yes, I do. I like to see what my friends thought of it before buying information technology.:)
Ruth wrote: "Yep, I do. I similar to see what my friends idea of it earlier buying it.:)" I think some of my all-time book reccomendations take come up from friends :)
I usually purchase books on a whim. If I know I'm going to buy the book I might but like I said I buy them on a whim so I really don't
Yeah! At that place's no doubt I get a thrill from traipsing into the book store and buying a book at random just by judging it on it'due south cover, the beginning sentence or something weird like that ;P
If I hear well-nigh a good book I would like, I almost e'er check up reviews of that book on the net before I buy it, actually.
i rarely buy books anymore. i'thou making good apply of my taxation dollar by using the library a few times a week.however, this book did take hold of my eye because of the championship.
i purchased information technology, and it turned out to be one of my all-fourth dimension favorites:
THE DORK OF CORK
Sometimes I do read reviews, but nigh ofttimes I only become by the blurb or the outset couple of chapters. If I take reviews into consideration, it's most likely from a friend or someone whose reading tastes I know.
I expect over the comprehend and read the beginning chapter of the book. If the encompass doesn't catch my center or the first chapter is slow I commonly don't buy it. I usually practice buy books randomly because if I see something I like I would purchase information technology.
Sometimes but I usually don't. I rely on recommendation past co-workers/friends and I usually read what 1 person who works in my local library mentions-I sometimes thing we share the aforementioned brain. Also, I receive a chapter a solar day from a unlike book each calendar week from a reading series I enroll in. Information technology ordinarily opens me up to things I would non ordinarily read.
I do read reviews but only good reviews that don't give abroad the story of the volume and I like reviews that are off-white. I ever find it interesting when people that are non fans of a sure genre review something in that genre and fustigate it simply at the same fourth dimension I am very interested when someone says something like, "Not existence a huge fan of horror or scifi, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this title." That blazon of wording would definitely spike my interest in reading the book. Plus I like when reviews compare things a little bit with other works.
I attempt to but volition go off recommendations from friends more than the professional person critic.
Mod Later all our friends know our tests more then some cynic who just like to criticise others piece of work.
Merely at the same time, there are other type or reviewers who do everything they can to bring out the truth about the volume they read. :)
when i write review i effort to let the readers know what i felt for the volume. and there are lot'southward of other reviewers known to me who are really true to their passion, one of such person is Timipre `~`Blahzin. In my opinion she's a Pro in Adult fiction :)
and then ultimately, I do read reviews before buying a volume just like Mommab said, if it's from some known person then that review(recommendation) holds a unique value.
I read reviews on this site so when I find something I would like to see in person I order upwardly a bunch from the library and make my choices when I accept them at home.I never would have known about so many of the books I read if it weren't for goodreads.
Arnab wrote: "I know loads of people who practise (okay fine I do!).Only seriously, do you ever buy a random volume? Or is it ever a calculated movement where you can never become wrong?"
Years ago, walking through a bookstore, I saw this volume The Dork of Cork
and bought it just because of the title.
Mod I totally concur with you Jaye... :)
I take to say that family and friends really have been the all-time source for good books and even more so are these book groups I have joined and moderated on hither. There are quite a few titles inside this book grouping and Desperate BookJunkies that I wouldn't have read on my own, and I totally loved them and found new favorite authors and genres considering of these picks. Ane of my favorite mixes within my genres that I take enjoyed is the sense of humor being pulled into some titles. I used to really savor the dark horror titles but now I have found a few great authors that have blended their humor into some twisted tales perfectly. If any of you are fans of this type of story check out J.A.Konrath, Blake Crouch, or Jeff Strand. They all worked on a really fun fear motion picture called Draculas and Konrath and Crouch have a really crafty tale called Series (Uncut) that I highly recommend.
about 75% of the time I read reviews first. I love when the reviews are all over & polar opposites; it makes me want to read the volume & make up one's mind for myself!
Mod That'southward a good way to await at it :)
and after all reviews are suppose to help, and if they can't so, ane tin decide for him/her self :)
But seriously, practice you ever purchase a random volume? Or is it always a calculated move where you tin can never go incorrect?"
Years ago, walking thursday..."
Sounds great! I would take bought it besides - what is it adjoin????
I volition look at the reviews and look for the friends who I trust the most. If that friend liked it then I will move that volume to the tiptop of the list. Even so, if it does not have a swell plot line, I will not purchase it. Sometimes I just purchase random books that sound adept. That is ane thing that I love nearly the bookstore is you can walk in and look at all of the books in person.
Personally I recollect that reading reviews gives yous more knowledge most the book and makes yous more aware of whether y'all want it or not. Only it tin also ruin the book because the opinions are biased and even though (if) a majority of the people say the same thing near the book, yous might call back completely dissimilar from them. So, I effort not to read reviews just sometimes i think its necessary, especially if the book is expensive!
Modern ofttimes times i find my-self reading less of a book and more of it's reviews.. ;) :p
Information technology depends, if information technology'due south a book with few ratings, and the author him/herself + some of their friends, have given it one or several 5 star reviews - I don't buy the book! It seems somehow quack and a little desperate. (peculiarly if there are so one or 2 star reviews from i or ii readers!)If information technology's from one or my favourite authors, or was recommended by someone I trust (and share taste with) I generally only buy it.
If information technology looks interesting, but I'thou not sure, I'll buy it if it'due south not too expensive. I've bought tons of random books in thrift shops and flea markets :-)
I think it'south very of import that people write why they dislike it - because and so y'all tin easily see if information technology will be a trouble for you lot :-)
If someone writes that a book is too literary or has as well many fantasy elements, I'll probably like it because of these things! If someone writes that a book is dour and depressing, I'll know to stay faar away :-)
If buying from an online seller (second-manus books), I do check reviews first.Usually, when I go to a bookstore. I mostly accept an idea what to await for. My TBR list is engraved at the back of my head.
Modern I mean lot's of books out there take one liner reviews printed all over them.. and then it'southward sorta inevitable escaping from reading reviews..
*but exceptions do happen :p
@Marian You need to teach me how to engrave then. Everytime I go in a bookstore I forget anything I want to read. I just scream in my head BOOKS!!!@Soul I do hold. Yet, sometimes I find that reviews can really ruin books for me. Like they get in my head and I am like "I am not suppose to like this because information technology has bad reviews...maybe something is incorrect with my mind!"

Andy wrote: "The hyperbole that is written on book covers is not trustworthy, and the more than exciting the cover art the more boring the pages betwixt the covers. I think that yous have to detect a reviewer that you ..." OMG, I was just thinking this the other solar day! It seems that if they put a elementary cover on the book and then the pages in betwixt accept a lot of worth. All the same, if the cover is busy then it seems that it is not a good story. Not always, but most of the fourth dimension. This seems to be especially true with YA!
I cutting downward my TBR listing to ten..I carefully choose which should belong. After I exhaust the books on that list, I replenish. So its not going to be difficult to call back.As for the book comprehend, I prefer simple volume covers. The older, the meliorate. I don't like buying film tie-in book covers. Total cover turn-offs are those books with face drawings, like this
.I won't bother reading its reviews, I simply don't like them on my shelf. I know I'thousand biased or whatnot, just I can't help it. I might consider reading them by borrowing, simply am not going to purchase it.
Modernistic Back in fourth dimension, I one time had ordered "Breaking Dawn" from online bookstore.. & when I opened that package I saw the book with
(talk about plough-off)Information technology's still in same packaging.. haven't bothered with putting it on my self :p just waiting for someone to enquire me for information technology.. and i'll give it to him(/her) without 2d thought... btw, I don't mind occasional faces on bookcover.. similar for case
